*****Use the tap from the frame outward. The inner threads are usually good and the tap will start with ease.
These taps, one for each side, labeled normal and [left character in Chinese), do the job, straightening the threads in the crank. It doesn't take a lot of pressure, just care, since the cranks are aluminum, but using some thin/light oil as a cutting lubricant is a good idea too.
The pedals, it turned out, weren't damaged--I just had to remove the aluminum fragments that were stuck in the threads. But pedals are cheaper to replace than cranks, too. These taps do not re-tap the pedals, just the cranks.
NOTE: There are some kits that bore out the crank, thread in an insert (which may come with the kit), and thus give you new pedal threads. THIS IS NOT that kit. This rethreads the aluminum, which really amounts to cleaning out the threads since it has already been threaded in the past. Too simple to do, yet so necessary to avoid replacing the crank--or installing inserts, etc.
NOTE: If these are too pricey for you, you could try lubricating a pedal with a thin/light oil on CLEAN pedal threads, and carefully screwing it in. This might clean out the threads enough to then install a greased pedal without crossthreading, etc. I went with the actual tool designed for this job, made out of cutting steel. These are beautiful tools, and I am happy to have them in my collection. The first use was worth the price.
I cleaned the threads on both pedal arms, even though only one side was damaged. When pedals have been in a long time, maybe installed without grease, there can be some bi-metal corrosion, since it is steel on aluminum. (galvanic corrosion, like on the terminal of a battery.) Once you have this set, you can clean any pedal cranks that look suspect. Again, remember to use a light weight lubricant and also be sure to clean up any metal shaving produced so that they don't contaminate something else.
I wasn’t paying attention and attempted to install a pedal on the wrong side so it messed up the threads. I thought about buying a replacement crank arm but figured I’d give this product a try first.
Total repair time took less than 5 minutes. I put some lubricant on the threads and wound it from the backside of the lever by hand and then used a wrench to finish it off. Repair done. Pedal went right in just like new.
Well made product, quality construction. If you are hesitant just give it a try and maybe it will work as well for you as it did for me!
